Terms of the demonstration
These are the terms for the public demonstration site at trybookpress.dev. This page is the authoritative copy. The demonstration site carries the same text, but it is a machine anybody can publish on, so this is the version to rely on if the two ever disagree.
It is a demonstration, not a service
The site is a running instance of BookPress serving an ordinary WordPress site, so that the software can be examined by using it. It is wiped and rebuilt from a fixed snapshot every 30 minutes. Anything typed into it is visible to every other visitor until then, and is deleted at the next reset.

Do not put anything real into it
There is no expectation of privacy and no expectation of retention. Do not enter personal data, real names or addresses, passwords you use anywhere else, payment details, or anything confidential. Content you post can be read, copied and republished by anybody before it is deleted, and once a reset has happened it cannot be recovered — including by asking us.
The shop is not a shop
No order placed on the site will ever be fulfilled, and no payment is taken or processed. There is no inventory, no seller, no shipping and no payment provider. The only payment method offered is cash on delivery, which collects no card, bank or account details — because nothing is delivered and there is nothing to pay. Any name or address typed into a checkout form is deleted at the next reset with everything else. Please do not type a real one.
Restrictions on what you may publish
Do not use the site to publish unlawful content; to harass, threaten or defame anybody; to host malware, phishing pages or deceptive material; to publish anything that infringes somebody's copyright, trade mark or other right; to send unsolicited messages; to impersonate us or anybody else; to attack this or any other system; or to attempt to reach data or systems that are not part of the demonstration.
Security research on the software itself is welcome and this site is there to be poked at. Please do not use a finding to reach beyond that one machine. How to report a finding →
How this site is moderated
Art. 14 DSA asks that we say plainly what we do about content, so:
- Nothing is reviewed before it is published. There is no editorial process, no approval queue and no human or automated screening of what a visitor writes. What is published is published at the request of the person who wrote it and is not ours.
- Everything is deleted automatically every 30 minutes, whatever it is. This is the primary and by far the most effective control, and it is not a moderation decision about any particular item — it applies to the entire site indiscriminately.
- Automated technical limits apply to everyone: rate limits on requests and on sign-in attempts, a challenge on the sign-in form, a fixed set of administrative screens refused at the web server for every account, and refusal of uploads whose content is not one of a small list of permitted image types. These are applied by machine, uniformly, and none of them looks at what a piece of content says.
- We act on notice. If we are told about unlawful content and we agree, we remove it and purge it from the content delivery network in front of the site. Decisions on a notice are taken by a person, not by an automated system. The procedure is here.
- We may block access to the demonstration from a source that is abusing it, at any time, without notice.
- We remove, or we leave alone. We never edit. If we act on something, we delete it; we do not rewrite a visitor's words and keep the rewritten version. That is a firm rule, and the reason is that editing somebody's content and republishing it is how a host stops being a host and becomes the author of what it republished.
- We claim no rights in anything you publish here. Posting on the demonstration grants us no licence and transfers nothing. We do not want it; it is deleted within half an hour.
- Because the site deletes everything it holds twice an hour and holds no accounts between resets, there is no suspension, no ban list and no account to restore.
One consequence of the sandbox being anonymous. Art. 17 DSA would normally have us send a statement of reasons to the person whose content we restricted. We cannot: the demonstration account is shared and published, we ask nobody to register, and we therefore hold no contact details for anyone who publishes here. Art. 17(2) applies that duty only "where the relevant electronic contact details are known to the provider", and here they never are. This paragraph is the explanation of why no such notice will reach you.
Content published by other visitors
Content on the demonstration site is not ours unless it is part of the fixed snapshot the site is rebuilt from. A page you find on that domain may have been written minutes ago by a stranger.
We have not reviewed, and cannot review, the material visitors publish there. Saying so is a statement about what is possible, not a policy we have chosen: the site accepts anonymous publication continuously and destroys everything twice an hour, and Art. 8 DSA expressly imposes no general obligation on a host to monitor what it stores. By operating the demonstration we do not represent or imply that we endorse anything posted on it, or that we believe it to be accurate, useful or harmless. It may contain material that is offensive, indecent or otherwise objectionable.
Our own statements about BookPress are on bookpress.io, and our legal texts are the ones in this directory. If something on the demonstration is unlawful, tell us and we will act on it.
No warranty, and no service
The site is provided as is and as available, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including without limitation any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, availability, accuracy or non-infringement. It may be slow, wrong, broken, or switched off entirely at any moment and without notice. Nothing on it is an offer, a contract or a promise of any service, and no support is owed for it. To the fullest extent permitted by law we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of it.
Nothing in that paragraph excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded — in particular for injury to life, body or health, or for intent or gross negligence.
Logging
Requests to the demonstration site are logged for security, abuse detection and debugging, and the log is archived off the site before each reset so that a reset cannot destroy the record of an attack. Exactly what is recorded, and for how long, is on the demonstration site's data page.
Changes
These terms are published from a version-controlled file and its history is the record of what changed and when. Significant changes are reflected on the demonstration site at the same time.
Law
These terms, and any dispute arising from use of the demonstration, are governed by German law to the extent a choice of law is permitted. Nothing here limits any mandatory statutory right you have as a consumer, or the protection of the law of the country in which you are habitually resident where that law gives you more.
